Pattidana is a special ceremony performed by Buddhists for the benefit of departed relatives & friends who may have the misfortune to be reborn in the lower states of existence. When these beings in the unfortunate realms become aware that relatives or friends have performed these great meritorious deeds which are then dedicated to them, their consciousness is lifted to take rebirth in the higher realms. They are thus relieved of their sufferings. Relatives are encouraged to perform these acts of merit for the departed.
