Biodata:

Venerable Ajahn Geoff Ṭhānissaro was born in America in 1949 and grew up in rural New York and Virginia. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1971 with a degree in European Intellectual History, he travelled to Thailand, where he studied meditation under Ven. Ajahn Fuang Jotiko (student of the late Ajaan Lee). He is the primary teacher of Venerable Chao Khun Keng of Santi Forest Monastery in Ulu Tiram.

Ven. Ajahn Ṭhānissaro was ordained in 1976 and lived at Wat Dhammasathit, and became the attendant monk of Ven. Ajahn Fuang for a few years, where he remained until his teacher’s passing in 1986. Before passing away in 1986, Ven. Ajahn Fuang made it known that he wanted Ven. Ajahn Ṭhānissaro to take over Wat Dhammasathit as its abbot. However, there was no precedent for a Westerner taking over a Thai monastery that had been founded by and for Thai monks, so the position of abbot remained vacant for 5 years.

In 1991, he travelled to the hills of San Diego County, USA, where he helped Ven. Ajahn Suwat Suvaco to establish Metta Forest Monastery. He has been the Abbot of the Monastery since 1993.

Ven. Ajahn Thanissaro has made significant contributions to the growth of Buddhism and the teachings of the Thai Forest Meditation Tradition by translating many of the teachings of the Kruba Ajahns in Thailand, as well as the Pali Canon, including the translation of The Buddhist Monastic Code, volumes 1 & 2.
